LSUS Online Bachelor's in Management: Choose Your Concentration

It takes a variety of professionals to run a business. As such, there are many different types of managers that keep any company afloat. That is why Louisiana State University Shreveport offers three unique concentrations for students in the Bachelor of Science in Management and Administration online program: General Management, Human Resource Management and International Business.

No matter the concentration, students take core courses to learn business communication skills, critical thinking, administrative policy, marketing basics, behavioral research and operation management. After students learn these essential skills, the three concentrations take them in different directions and provide more specialized learning.

About the General Management Concentration

The General Management concentration gives students foundational knowledge in organizational leadership, HR management and new business development. Electives cover the following topics:

  • Negotiations
  • Basics of International Business
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Labor Laws
  • International Human Resources
  • Compensation and Staffing
  • Improving Performance
  • Training Staff

The General Management concentration is perfect for students who wish to become office managers or executive assistants. Students can earn between $47,332 and $61,919, depending on the management position, per PayScale data as of March 2018.

About the Human Resource Management Concentration

If you think of yourself as a "people-person," then the Human Resource Management concentration may be right for you. In this specialty, students learn how to manage staffing needs for companies of all sizes. Each student takes upper-level courses in compensation administration, staffing organizations, and training and development. Then, students can choose one additional elective from the following:

  • Labor Law
  • International Human Resource Management
  • Performance Improvement

Human Resource Management can be a lucrative career for those who succeed in it. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the 2016 median pay for such professionals was $106,910 per year. Furthermore, the BLS expects this profession to grow by nine percent between 2016 and 2026.

About the International Business Concentration

As the economy becomes more and more globalized, so does business management. The International Business concentration prepares students to lead companies that cross borders, cultures and languages. All students in this specialization take Introduction to International Business. Then, students choose the rest of their required hours from the following upper-level courses:

  • International Law
  • International Economics
  • International Finance
  • International Human Resource Management
  • International Marketing

Students should choose these classes based on the types of management positions they wish to hold in business. After all, global companies need managers of all kinds. The salary of an international business manager varies, with a median of $79,000, according to PayScale.com as of May 2018. Knowledge of a second language can help professionals in this field earn a higher salary.

Before choosing between these concentrations, consider what type of management role appeals to you, what kind of salary you expect to make and what natural talents you bring to the table. With these factors in mind, you can choose the area of focus that is right for you.
