M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction: English as a Second Language (12 Courses; 36 Credit Hours)

The MEDCI in ESL includes the following curriculum items:

  • Language learning influences and a foundation in linguistics to help non-native students succeed.
  • Techniques and training to improve reading, writing and listening skills for English Language Learners (ELLs).

The following are some career opportunities available to MEDCI in ESL graduates:

  • ESL K-12 teacher.
  • ESL adult teacher.
  • Department of Defense teacher.
  • ESL teacher abroad.

The MEDCI in ESL requires students to complete eight foundation courses and four specialization courses. Each course is worth three credit hours and lasts seven weeks. Course information is listed below.

Foundation Courses 

Foundations of Educational Research: This seven-week, three-credit course includes education research study methods and their foundations, with emphasis on the interpretation of field literature. Students can create a written research proposal.

Additional foundation courses include the following:

  • Curriculum.

  • Educational Technology Applied to the Classroom.
  • Creating a Professional Learning Community.
  • Leading Instruction.
  • Utilizing Data for School Improvement.
  • Final Project.

Specialization Courses:

M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction: Reading & Literacy (12 Courses; 36 Credit Hours)

The MEDCI in Reading and Literacy program includes the following curriculum items:

  • Work preparation for grades K-12.
  • International Reading Association involvement and experiences.
  • Strategy training including balanced literacy and phonics.
  • Overall strategies to promote literacy, reading and lifelong learning.

The following are some career opportunities available to MEDCI in Reading and Literacy graduates:

  • Reading Specialist.
  • Literacy Coach.
  • Lead Teacher.

Learning and Education: This seven-week, three-credit course includes theories on how students learn, with emphasis on applications in K-16 environments. Theories include information processing, social cognitive, behavioral, developmental, and constructivist. Class activities allow learners to explore how learning theories shape educational practice.

M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction: General (12 Courses; 36 Credit Hours)

The MEDCI General Emphasis program includes the following curriculum items:

  • Expertise that may be valuable to a particular institution, city, or state.
  • Goal alignment to optimum educational strategies, theories and best practices.
  • An opportunity to align your MEDCI to your interests with the help of an advisor.

MEDCI General Emphasis program students work closely with advisors to tailor courses that align with their specific career objectives.

The MEDCI General Emphasis program requires students to complete eight foundation courses and four additional courses. According to their needs, students choose four additional courses from a selection of eight. Each course is worth three credit hours and lasts seven weeks.

Foundation Courses

Education Technology Applied to the Classroom: This seven-week, three-credit course is a project-based, hands-on course covering the use of technology in the classroom. Subjects include hardware and software selection, multimedia authoring tools, communications technology and the development of instructional materials.

Additional foundation courses include the following:

  • Curriculum.
  • Learning and Education.
  • Creating a Professional Learning Community.
  • Leading Instruction.
  • Utilizing Data for School Improvement.
  • Final Project.

In addition to the foundation courses, you’ll choose four of the following courses to complete program requirements:
