Why Introverts Make Good Entrepreneurs

The idea that only extroverts can succeed in business is losing traction. An outgoing, assertive nature is common to the typical extrovert, and historically, some have considered this personality essential to successful business. While no one disputes that many extroverts are highly successful, the qualities of the introverted entrepreneur are beginning to reveal their value to the business world. The ability to think deeply, listen well and remain calm in the face of change can create success for the introverted entrepreneur.

Introverts Crave Solitude in a Chaotic World

Introverts need quiet time to process their thoughts and formulate ideas. An extrovert thrives in social situations, but the introvert gains strength from solitude. Introversion is not shyness. A shy person may yearn for social interaction but avoid it due to fear of rejection; introverts who avoid social gatherings do so because large-group interactions sap their energy, not because of fear of social rejection. Introverts prefer small groups to large ones and enjoy spending time alone.

Introverted Entrepreneurs Offer Unique Skills

Introverts account for roughly 30 percent of the population. Forty percent of executives identify as introverts. The business world boasts many famous introverts:

  • Warren Buffet, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.
  • Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft.
  • Andrea Jung, former CEO of Avon.
  • Marissa Mayer, president and CEO of Yahoo.
  • Larry Page, co-founder of Google.
  • Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple.
  • Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook.

You may know these names, but you probably did not know that these successful individuals are introverts. More organizations now recognize the benefits of introverted employees and are trying to take advantage of their strengths. For example, NASA, Proctor & Gamble and General Electric have engaged a consulting firm that helps introverts utilize their strengths in the business world.

An Introverted Entrepreneur’s Qualities for Success

Introverted entrepreneurs possess many positive qualities that help them succeed in business. They remain calm in the face of upheaval and strife. Introverts are critical thinkers. They can remain focused for long periods of time, which can prove critical to business success. The ability to weather storms and overcome hurdles while staying focused on a goal serves introverted entrepreneurs well. These and other qualities help introverted entrepreneurs succeed.

Introverts are good listeners. They gather information about a topic, process it and formulate a decision or plan. Good listening skills also make an introverted entrepreneur’s co-workers and employees feel valued. An empowered employee is one who delivers results. Customers benefit too; the introverted entrepreneur's ability to listen to and truly hear the needs of the customer can be a big advantage in the business world.

Introverts empower others. They value the insight and experience of other people. This key skill helps the introvert forge one-on-one relationships to build a team focused on success. Introverts value meaningful conversation; they respect depth of ideas and not simply breadth of knowledge.

Introverts are deep thinkers. They crave — and need — solitude. This comfort with isolation allows an introvert to think deeply about ideas and craft creative solutions to strategic problems. Introverted entrepreneurs typically respond to situations calmly and thoughtfully instead of reactively or randomly. They can see the “big picture” while also thinking through the details.

Introverted entrepreneurs do not need others to validate their ideas. Before launching an idea, introverts analyze the details and conduct research to formulate a plan. This solid foundation helps the introvert feel comfortable and confident. Introverts value the opinions of others, but they do not need those opinions for validation.

Introverted Entrepreneurs Can Benefit From an Online MBA Program

As the beneficial qualities of the introverted entrepreneur become more familiar, introverts are beginning to recognize the valuable business roles they can play. An online MBA program provides an opportunity for introverted entrepreneurs to maximize their potential through the pursuit of an advanced degree. The online setting plays to the strengths and preferences of the introvert. Online classes let the introvert engage in communication that feels comfortable, and introverts can utilize their preparation and contemplative reflection skills to unlock the benefits of an online MBA program.
