International Business Is a Top MBA Concentration

New York City is a major international business destination, but how do cities in small countries like Finland, Sweden and Slovenia compare? According to the Global Dynamism Index, they are among the top 10 places globally for business growth.

Whether staying close to home or traveling to another country, a career in international business can offer attractive benefits. What's the best way to get there? A general Master of Business Administration (MBA) provides a solid foundation for leadership positions in business. But when it comes to competing in the global marketplace, a specialized MBA in international business may be the way to go.

Louisiana State University in Shreveport (LSUS) offers an online MBA with a concentration in international business that is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). With coursework that students can complete in just 10 months, this highly ranked and affordable program is an appealing option for professionals who want to advance their careers in the global business environment.

What Is the Value of an MBA in International Business?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an MBA may be required for high-level jobs in this sector. For business professionals interested in advancement, an MBA may be the right choice. But the value of an MBA goes beyond career goals.

Additional benefits of an MBA in international business include the following:

The Ability to Work Across Cultures: With a growing global marketplace, employers are looking for professionals with a mindset to match. Stacie Nevadomski Berdan, in a Huffington Post article on top skills for MBA graduates, explains: "Having a global mindset requires not only possessing the technical skills necessary for operating successfully in an international environment, but also the personal skills necessary for applying these effectively." This includes the ability to work across cultures on virtual teams.

Strong Employment Prospects: A 2017 Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) Corporate Recruiters Survey gathered data from employers representing more than 628 companies in 51 countries worldwide. Survey results show that 86 percent of employers plan to hire recent MBA graduates. Interested in working internationally? Companies in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the United States are eager to hire people with MBAs in international business.

High Pay: The BLS reports that in business occupations, workers with a master's have some of the highest salaries.

  • The GMAC survey reports a projected median base starting salary of $110,000 for MBAs, an almost 90 percent jump over the salary for a bachelor's degree.
  • In addition, the GMAC survey found that employers pay more for MBAs with specializations, such as international business.
  • Poets & Quants reports that international business is among the highest-paying MBA specializations, with mid-career salaries averaging $121,000.

High Satisfaction: With strong employment prospects and higher salaries, it is no wonder that MBAs report high job satisfaction. A PayScale survey found that MBAs in international business report being "extremely satisfied."

An MBA in international business prepares graduates for more than leadership positions across the business sector — it equips them with the cultural awareness employers are looking for in a global workplace. Plus, for those with a desire to travel, an MBA in international business can open the door to career opportunities around the world.
