M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction: Reading & Literacy
Through engaging course content and required hands-on field experience in schools and classrooms, students study the most current theories, models and approaches used to teach reading. Students learn how to assess reading ability, apply reading techniques in the classroom, and create reading programs tailored to the needs of individual readers, as well as groups. Courses go beyond the traditional training in assessment and instruction and also include Administration and Leadership.
Students may qualify for a federal TEACH Grant for this high-need program, with up to $7,456 for graduate tuition.
This program will prepare you for many job opportunities, including reading specialist, literacy coach, and lead teacher.

The MEDCI in Reading and Literacy program offers:
- Preparation for work from kindergarten through high school
- Experience and involvement with the International Reading Association
- Training in a variety of teaching strategies including phonics and balanced literacy.

Course activities help students explore how learning theories shape educational practice in schools and identify those theories that most influence their own teaching practices. Throughout the course students collect and analyze school improvement data.

The candidate will present findings in an oral presentation and a written manuscript. The document will include an extensive review of existing research on the topic, methodology, and data analysis implemented by the candidate, and discussion.

Provides an overview of the reading process from emergent literacy through adulthood. Includes practical training in vocabulary and comprehension development.
